Advice for the Next United States President

Dear Colleague:

Globalization and the interdependence among countries of the world are a major challenge facing public relations and communications professionals. One topic of increasing global conversation is the 2008 United States presidential election.

We who work internationally share a common vision. That vision is to use public relations to foster understanding of common interests and build respect for nationalities, cultures and contributions by people across the world. As public relations professionals, we have an enormous opportunity to engage in public diplomacy and articulate solutions for better global understanding and respect.

Dr. Charles Salmon, Dean of Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences, one of the largest schools of Communications in the U.S., and Rhoda Weiss, APR, Fellow PRSA, ABD, the immediate past national chair and chief executive officer of the Public Relations Society of America and their team are conducting research into what a new U.S. president would need to do to strengthen the U.S. reputation abroad.

The survey is reaching across countries on all continents. It asks you to consider what the new president could do to improve relations between the United States and countries in your region of the world. Constructive recommendations will be included in a summary report that will be distributed widely among decision makers.

Please consider the following questions carefully and thoughtfully and contribute your response. You will have an option of listing your name, position, organization and country at the end of the survey if you would like. Results will be compiled and edited independently by the research team and then publicized by Michigan State University, our organizations and other groups. Should you have any questions, contact fernan85@msu.edu . Thank you for your time and participation.

Best Regards,

Lou Capozzi, President, International Communications Consultancy Organization (ICCO)

Charles Salmon, Dean, Michigan State University

Rhoda Weiss, 2007 National Chair & CEO, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)
